hmm… well, you called me a smart ass, but i guess i’m pretty laid back most of the time. there’s no real use in getting all excited over anything when i know i’m going to die. 

but you’re supposed to be the one that wants to live

i know. i do. i really do. more than anything. i don’t get why soph wants to give up all of this for a death date.

for some people, giving up just seems easier than trying. you should know that, though, huh?

What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?

• Clara Moore. No nicknames.

What is your character’s hair color? Eye color?

• Her hair is a chocolate-y kind of brown, and she has attentive blue eyes!

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

• Her smile is a little awkward. She’s the kind of person who can’t smile correctly on command, so her pictures always look a little bit off.

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?

• She has a small, smooth patch of skin on her thumb from when she touched the oven as a small child.

Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?

• Clara is a fairly solitary character. She’s quiet mostly, until she feels comfortable around someone. Then, she can rarely stop talking. The problem is that she doesn’t often take the time to grow close to others to allow them that opportunity— she prefers simply keeping to herself. She likes her family enough and is appreciative that they never pushed her into something she didn’t want. As for friends, she’d probably consider Metis her closest friend since she appears to be so comfortable around him.

Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?

Where does your character go when he’s angry?

• I imagine that it would take a lot to anger Clara. She’s probably the close-your-eyes-and-count-to-ten kind of girl.

What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?

• Clara would probably have the common fears: heights, snakes, spiders, etc… I can see her with a pretty big fear of heights, though. She was a pretty rambunctious child and fell out of a tree at one point. She wasn’t hurt, but it scared the heart out of her.

Does she have a secret?

• I’m almost certain she does, but she’s very good at the whole “not talking” thing.

What makes your character laugh out loud?

• If you’re close to her, nearly anything. She’s very easily amused, but she’s not comfortable letting loose like that around those she doesn’t consider dear to her heart. In public, she tends to just let out a small giggle or discreet smile.

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?

• Clara seems almost…too private for love? Although, I think that she’s had at least one significant other. It just seems like it. I can’t tell their gender, though. But they were soft and quiet like herself.

What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can?

• Lots and lots of vegetables and tofu! She’s a devout vegetarian because she saw a film in high school about the meat industry and it terrified her. Her bedroom would be pretty neat, I think. Maybe there are a few stray clothes hanging around. The trashcan next to her desk is full of orange peels. 

Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?

• Her feet are tiny, and she tends to wear striped socks because she thinks that they look neat.

When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?

• She doesn’t seem to associate a smell as much as she does memories from it. Apparently she used to help her mother with cooking, she has a lot of memories of being perched up on the counter top with a potato peeler in hand.

Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?

• She’s a huge packrat! Clara hates having to throw anything out since she thinks that nearly everything has some kind of memory and sentimental value to it. She likes to especially keep personal notes and class binders/notebooks, as she has a habit of doodling in them. 

It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?

• Probably visiting home! Clara lives on campus, but her house isn’t too far away that she can’t visit frequently. Her parents like having her back home, and she tends to miss her younger brother, even if he claims not to miss her. I’d imagine that she has her nose buried in homework or maybe in painting! Since she moved into the dorms, she and her mother have been working on turning her old bedroom into a half art studio.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

• She used to be very close with a boy (Eric) who lived next door to her. When she was twelve, his family moved. After that point, she kind of stopped reaching out to people and became more introverted. Since she and Eric had known each other all of their lives and were so close, she never really had to make other friends.

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with

• I can’t imagine that Clara goes out all that often at night, ahhh… She’d probably like a museum or something, but that’s more of a daytime activity!
